Monday, November 9th, 2009 – Ryan

Today starts my training for the Rock n' Roll New Orleans Marathon. I found a 16-week training program on Runner's World similar to the one I used for the 2009 Chicago Marathon. It’s quite easy to use, just input a previous race time, how many miles you want to train per week, and an “intensity level” and it spits out a program. For 2009 Chicago, I set the training program to “hard” intensity, but for New Orleans I’m setting it on “moderate”. The first week isn’t too bad, 41 total miles. Looks like the most difficult week is 59 miles, which is close to the most I ran during Chicago training.

The program is split into easy runs, speedwork / tempo runs, and long runs. My program has me running 5 days a week whereas Leanna’s has her running 4 days a week. Today was 7 miles @ 7:07/min pace for me. However, we had several malfunctions that were almost catastrophic. First of all, I accidentally spit my gum out. For those of you that know me, I can't run without gum. Running without gum is my kryptonite. With about 2 miles to go I lost said gum during a routine exhale. Then, the Garmin beeps twice, letting me know the battery was low. I had to hustle home because I didn't want my workout to be lost if the battery died. Needless to say I made it.
